Chaos on Abuja–Kaduna Rail Line: Passengers Flee After Train Goes Off Track
A train on the Abuja–Kaduna route went off the tracks on Tuesday morning, leaving several coaches toppled and sending passengers into panic.
According to information obtained by the NDMPAI FCT Media Team, the derailment occurred not long after the train departed Abuja at about 11 a.m., heading towards Kaduna.
Survivors described the scene as chaotic, with frightened commuters rushing out of the carriages for safety.
One of the passengers who spoke to our correspondent recounted the moment of the crash:
“It was sudden, there was no warning. People were screaming and running in all directions. It was complete confusion. We can’t even say for sure if everyone is safe yet — we are just praying that no lives are lost.”
The Managing Director of the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC), Kayode Opeifa, confirmed the incident in a telephone conversation. He noted that emergency operations had been mobilized to the site but declined to provide further details.
“I don’t want to say much for now, but yes, the derailment happened and rescue teams are currently on ground,” he said.
As of press time, no fatalities had been officially reported, and the cause of the derailment remains unknown.
The Abuja–Kaduna corridor is one of the busiest rail lines in the country, serving hundreds of passengers daily. It has, however, witnessed several security and operational setbacks in recent years, most notably the March 2022 terrorist attack in which many passengers were killed or abducted.
